Wuhan Zhongde Psychological Hospital
Wuhan Zhongde Psychological Hospital is a non-profit specialist mental-health hospital (private non-enterprise unit, registered with the Wuhan Civil Affairs Bureau; supervised by the Wuhan Yangtze River New District Health Commission). It was co-founded in 1988 in Jiang'an District, Wuhan, together with Prof. Heinz Klette, former president of the German Society for Social Psychiatry, and his wife Rosa Klette, with the first Chinese president being Zeng Qifeng.
History and academic record
The hospital traces its origin to the Jiang'an District Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, founded in June 1988 with the participation of Prof. Heinz Klette, who was appointed its honorary director. In June 1992 a day-hospital (中德心理健康白天医院) opened on Sanyang Road, Hankou. The 1993 Wuhan Yearbook records that it was “the first institution in mainland China to combine pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, occupational therapy and recreational therapy”. The Wuhan Reform and Opening-up 30-Year Yearbook (1978–2008) records that the day-care and occupational-therapy model developed at the centre was recognised by the Ministry of Civil Affairs as the “Wuhan model” of community service. In 2003 the institution was renamed 武汉中德心理医院 (Wuhan Zhongde Psychological Hospital); following the January 2026 integration it operates under the name 武汉忠德心理医院 (also romanised as Wuhan Zhongde Psychological Hospital).
An independent academic account of this history appears in Huang & Kirsner (2020), Psychoanalytic Inquiry 40(1):3–15 (DOI: 10.1080/07351690.2020.1690876), which refers to the hospital as “Zhongde Psychology Hospital in Wuhan”.
